Thierry Falise and Vincent Reynaud could be freed within days, Laos' ambassador to France told RFI radio Wednesday. "This morning we talked with the ambassadors of France, Belgium and the United States. ... We talked of liberation, of deportation. ... I think we will free them rapidly, it is a matter of days,'' he told RFI.

Their trial was widely condemned as unfair. Press rights group Reporters Sans Frontieres urged France and other Western governments to put pressure on Laos to overturn the sentences by withdrawing international aid to the Communist state. Laos urged the United States and Europe Wednesday not to impose economic sanctions.

The French Foreign Ministry earlier said its ambassador to Laos, Bernard Pottier, along with his Belgian and American counterparts, met the Laotian Deputy Foreign Minister Wednesday to press demands for their release.

Falise's brother-in-law, Guy Deschuyteneer, said the family had been in contact with the Belgian ambassador to Thailand, who is in Laos, to try to find a solution. "He told us that the jail conditions were not at a European level, but were decent.''
